Unable to Find TV Channels-Signal-related diagnostics
Free-to-air TV via an antenna is the primary way most Australians access channels such as ABC, SBS, Seven, Nine and Ten. If your TV displays “No Signal” or finds zero channels after scanning, the issue is usually related to coverage conditions, antenna direction, broadcast maintenance, or interference, rather than a TV fault.
This guide is prepared by ENGLAON, based on Australian RV and caravan travel experience, with reference to information published by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).

1️⃣ Coverage Limitations (Black Spot Areas)
Not all areas in Australia receive strong terrestrial TV signals. While most populated regions have coverage, there are many marginal or no-coverage pockets.
According to ACMA, hundreds of black spot areas exist across metropolitan, regional and remote Australia. In these locations, reception may be unreliable or completely unavailable without satellite TV.
How to Check Your Address
Use the official ACMA coverage tool:
👉 mySwitch
The mySwitch website allows you to:
Enter your exact address
Check if coverage is Good, Marginal, or No Coverage
Identify the correct transmitter
View the exact broadcast frequency and channel number
Confirm antenna direction
If mySwitch indicates “No Coverage,” your TV is likely working correctly but the location does not support terrestrial reception.
2️⃣ Antenna Direction and Receiving range
Incorrect antenna direction is one of the most common causes of zero-channel scans, especially for caravans and RV users.
Recommended Steps
Use mySwitch to identify the nearest transmitter.
Adjust your antenna to face that transmitter direction.
Perform a fresh Auto Scan after repositioning.
Useful Tip for RV Users
Consider downloading the Antenna Mate App onto your mobile phone. This is particularly useful when travelling between regional towns.
📡 Antenna Receiving Range Limitation
Each antenna model has a maximum effective receiving distance.
For example:
ENGLAON ETA380HV2 maximum recommended range ≈ 50km from nearest transmitter.
3️⃣ If Only One Channel Is Missing
If only one channel (for example Channel 7) is missing while other channels work normally, the issue may not be coverage-related.
Possible Causes
• Broadcaster Maintenance
Broadcasters occasionally perform transmitter maintenance or upgrades.
Manual Tuning (Manual Scan) Solution
If only one channel is missing, you can try Manual Tuning instead of Auto Scan.
Steps:
Go to TV Menu
Select Channel Setup
Choose Manual Tuning / Manual Scan
Refer to mySwitch to find:
Broadcast frequency
UHF channel number
Enter the frequency manually
Scan and store the channel
Manual tuning can often restore a single missing broadcaster without affecting your other saved channels.
4️⃣ Broadcast Outages
If everyone in your neighbourhood has lost the same channel, the problem is likely transmitter-related.
• Local Transmission Faults
• Scheduled Technical Work
Suggested Action:
Check the broadcaster’s website.
Ask nearby residents.
Retry scanning later.
5️⃣ Weather & Environmental Conditions
Digital TV signals can be affected by environmental factors.
• Heavy Storms or Strong Wind
Strong wind can physically shift rooftop or RV antennas. Even a slight movement can reduce signal strength enough to cause signal loss.
• Atmospheric Signal Ducting
Certain weather conditions, especially in coastal areas, can cause signal interference from distant transmitters. This may disrupt normal reception temporarily.
• Hills, Trees & Buildings
Mountains, dense trees, and tall buildings can block line-of-sight transmission. Valleys and coastal cliffs are particularly prone to weak reception.
6️⃣ Common Household Electrical Interference
Electrical appliances inside the home or caravan can cause digital interference.
Appliances that may affect reception:
Washing machines
Hot water systems
Refrigerators
LED lights
Light switches
Power boards
Suggested Fix
Turn off each appliance one at a time while checking TV reception. If reception improves when a device is switched off, that appliance is likely causing interference.
